The genus Santalum belongs to family Santalaceae and more than 103 variants are known to inhabit the globe. Varying number of species are being reported by several researchers, but contrastingly only 16 significant species of Santalum have been identified and categorised. Worldwide sandalwood is mainly categorised as Indian sandalwood, Australian sandalwood, Hawaiian sandalwood and sandalwood of the pacific islands as per its geographical presence across the world. The price of Indian sandalwood (Santalum album L.) is considered to be several times higher than other sandalwood species and the essential oil obtained from it is of superior quality Apart from S. album, other species of Santalum are only of pedagological interest as they are least exploitable for any kind of commercial purposes.
Indian sandalwood or white sandalwood is popularly known as “Dollar earning parasite” and its essential oil is regarded as “Queen of essential oil”. S. album is the state tree of Karnataka and Karnataka is critically acclaimed as sandalwood state (Gandhada Nadu) while ‘Mysuru’ is eulogised as a sandalwood shrine (Gandhada Gudi). It is commonly known by its Sanskrit name ‘Chandana’ and is indigenous to peninsular India. Its natural area of distribution is believed to be Karnataka and northern parts of Tamil Nadu.
Earlier centuries witnessed utilization of sandalwood in the form of fine woodworking artefact or carving deities and as a temple construction material. In the modern era, major requirement of Indian sandalwood is in deriving essential oil from its heartwood which is used for variety of purposes. It is used as antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, astringent, cicatrisant, carminative, diuretic, disinfectant, emollient, expectorant, hypotensive, memory booster, sedative and as a prominent export material. The most important criteria for sandalwood essential oil are the alpha and beta santanol content and the ratio of these components. The International standards (ISO) set for best quality essential sandalwood oil characteristics (ISO 3518:2002) specifies 41%-55% alpha and 16%-24% beta santanol content. The oil is vigorously exported to countries in the Middle East, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, France, Australia, UK and USA.
Exploitation of natural stands and skewed government policies has significantly contributed for the decline in natural stocks of Indian sandalwood. Due to huge international demand the prices of Indian sandalwood have skyrocketed and the production has drastically reduced from over the past two decades. Due to removal of skewed government policies and realizing the economic benefits, a renewed interest is shown by the traditional farmers in growing and cultivating sandalwood in the long run. Approximately 600 hectares per year increase in acreage is estimated, according to an estimate by the Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), Bengaluru. Several investors, farmland and real estate owners across the country are investing in extensive plantations using elite genetic material from IWST, Bengaluru.
